10 Reasons to Abolish the IMF and World Bank 10 Reasons to Abolish the IMF and World Bank
By Kevin Danaher - (Co-founder of Global Exchange) Two of the most powerful institutions that have promoted the ''free market'' agenda of the large corporations are the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. This book gets at the root causes of the problems created by them and presents ten arguments for abolishing the World Bank and IMF - replacing them with democratic institutions that would make the global economy more accountable to an informed and active citizenry. We abolished slavery; we abolished Jim Crow laws; we abolished the exclusion of women from voting; we abolished the 60-hour work week; and we can abolish international banking institutions that do more to prevent democracy than promote it. If we are to have real democracy - then sovereignty must reside in the people themselves - not in institutions with limited public accountability. (104 pages - November 2001) Kevin travels the world speaking to community groups about the effects of corporate globalization and how to get involved in the grassroots movement challenging corporate rule. 4'' Longevity Bowl with Box 4'' Longevity Bowl with Box
This bowl is hand-tuned and sings in a clear voice. The box is hand-made with sustainably harvested Himalayan ''lokta'' paper. Each handmade lokta box comes complete with a bowl - wooden ringer - pad and instructional insert. This exclusive singing bowl box is attractively packaged as a gift to go! (4''sq. x 2''h) Since the time of the historical Buddha Shakyamuni (560 - 489 B.C.E.) the harmonics of singing bowls have been used for meditation and ceremonial purposes. Singing Bowls are struck or rubbed around the rim with a playing mallet to produce a blend of harmonic resonances and vibrations. ''Shou'' is the ancient symbol for longevity. It is commonly used in classical Chinese and Tibetan art. THI produces elegant hand-made paper products for Tibet Collection using the inner bark of the Daphne Cannabina bush - locally known as lokta. Lokta is found at altitudes above 6 - 500 ft. in almost all the Nepalese Himalayan region. It has a unique characteristic of regenerating itself every 4-5 years after the bark has been peeled and cut away for making paper. Natural and chemical dyes - as well as other organic materials - are used in assorted combinations to create a vibrant range of colors and textures. Lokta is harvested for the suppliers in sustainably managed forest areas - thus preserving the fragile forest ecology of Nepal while providing gainful employment to local mountain people.

After months of relentless news about terrorism - anthrax - war and the hunt for Osama bin Laden - our national conversation has taken a dramatic shift. Reflection has superceded our initial grief and anger - as we try to understand how the nightmare of 9/11 will affect us - our loved ones and our country in the long term. To capture the cutting edge of that conversation - AlterNet has released After 9/11: Solutions for a Saner World. The well-rounded collection of 42 articles untangles the knot of our new post-9/11 landscape - tackling every subject from civil liberties to Islamic fundamentalism to economics to sex. ''After 9/11 answers the once-unanswerable questions and envisions a once-unimaginable future - '' says AlterNet's executive editor Don Hazen. ''Its essays provide the context people need to understand how the terrorist attacks have changed their individual lives and what every one of us can do to prevent future attacks.'' Some of the essays are controversial - like Tamim Ansary's ''The Taliban -- An Afghan American Speaks - '' which sparked a national debate culminating in the New York Times Magazine. Others are inspirational - like Bill Moyer's patriotic call to re-mobilize America's citizenry. Eleven of the essays were written exclusively for the book - to update the national consciousness since the first few months after the attacks. The others were carefully selected from the thousands of articles featured on AlterNet in the months after the terrorist attacks.
